In a call with his Israeli counterpart on Sunday, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin urged Israel to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.
In the call with Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, Austin also reinforced the need to pivot from military operations in Lebanon to a diplomatic pathway to provide security for civilians as soon as feasible.
Pentagon spokesperson Major General Patrick Ryder said in a statement Austin stressed that steps must be taken soon to address the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Hezbollah has threatened Israel with more attacks should it continue its offensive in Lebanon.
The group said in a statement the attack in southern Haifa "is but a small fraction of what awaits if it decides to continue its aggression against our ... people".
It also detailed how its drones were able to surpass Israeli defences.
"The missile force … launched dozens of missiles towards various targets … with the aim of occupying the Israeli air defence systems.
"At the same time, the air force of the Islamic Resistance launched squadrons of various drones towards various areas in Acre and Haifa.
"The qualitative drones were able to penetrate the Israeli air defence radars without being detected and reached their target in a training camp for the elite Golani Brigade in the Binyamina area."
The statement said Israeli officers and soldiers who were "preparing to participate in the attack on Lebanon" were targeted.

An investigation will attempt to answer why Israel's Iron Dome defence system was not activated in Hezbollah's drone strike near Binyamin.
"We will study and investigate how an unmanned aircraft penetrated without warning," an IDF spokesperson said in a statement.
"We will learn and improve."
The spokesperson said the IDF is now contacting the families of those injured or killed in the attack.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had warned the United States was putting the lives of its troops "at risk by deploying them to operate US missile systems in Israel".
"While we have made tremendous efforts in recent days to contain an all-out war in our region, I say it clearly that we have no red lines in defending our people and interests," Araghchi posted on X.

The Hezbollah attack on Binyamina again showed Israel is not impervious to aerial attacks.
In the wake of Sunday's attack, the US announced it would help bolster Israel's defences by sending a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery to Israel, along with the troops needed to operate it.
Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin authorised the deployment of the THAAD battery at the direction of US President Joe Biden.
However, the system is not being sent to combat drone attacks from within Lebanon.
Ryder said the THAAD was intended to defend Israel "from any further ballistic missile attacks by Iran".

The secretary-general also reiterated a warning that peacekeepers must not be targeted.

'It is not storming a base'
S
By Sean Baumgart
The Israeli military has responded to UN claims that two of its tanks "forcibly" entered a UN base in Lebanon.
As per Reuters:
The UNIFIL peacekeeping force said two Israeli Merkava tanks destroyed the main gate of a base and forcibly entered before dawn on Sunday morning local time.
After the tanks left, shells exploded 100 metres away, releasing smoke that blew across the base and sickened personnel, the UN said in a statement.
In its version of events, the Israeli military said Hezbollah militants fired anti-tank missiles at Israeli troops, wounding 25 of them.
The attack was very close to a UNIFIL post and a tank helping evacuate the casualties under fire then backed into the UNIFIL post, it said.
"It is not storming a base. It is not trying to enter a base. It was a tank under heavy fire, mass casualty event, backing up to get out of harm's way," the military's international spokesperson Nadav Shoshani told reporters.
