Cheryl Cole lashes out at media reporting of Liam Payne's death as partner Kate Cassidy remembers 'my angel'
Cole and Payne dated for two years but share son Bear.
In short:
Cheryl Cole has lashed out at "abhorrent reports and media exploitation" following Liam Payne's death and asked people to remember the pair's 7-year-old son Bear.
Payne's former One Direction band mate Niall Horan has also spoken out, saying his death "just doesn't feel real".
What's next?
Payne's father, Geoff, has reportedly landed in Argentina, police sources told AFP.
Liam Payne's former partner and mother to his child, Cheryl Cole, has lashed out at "abhorrent reports and media exploitation" following his death, and asked fans to let Payne "rest in peace at last".
Payne, 31, suffered "multiple traumas" and "internal and external haemorrhaging" after falling from the balcony of his room on the third floor of the CasaSur hotel in central Buenos Aires.
His death sparked an outpouring of grief from fans of the boy band, which rocketed to fame after forming as part of a British reality television show in 2010 before splitting up six years later.
Cole, a former Girls Aloud member and X Factor host, shares a 7-year-old son Bear with Payne.
She said she was navigating an "earth shattering event" and reminded people "that we have lost a human being".
"Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend and a father to our 7 years old (sic.) son," Cole wrote on Instagram.
"A son that now has to face the reality of never seeing his father again.
"What is troubling my spirit the most is that one day Bear will have access to the abhorrent reports and media exploitation we have seen in the past two days.
"It is breaking my heart further that I cannot protect him from that in his future."
Entertainment outlet TMZ has copped backlash for posting photos of Payne's dead body from the scene, before later removing the images.
Executive producer Michael Babcock defended publishing the photos, telling Fox5 New York they helped confirm Payne's identity via tattoos before police had released official confirmation.
Cole ended her statement by asking people to think twice about leaving comments or making videos.
"Please give Liam the little dignity he has left in the wake of his death to rest in some peace at last."
Payne first met Cole in 2008 when he was 14 and she was a X Factor judge, before the pair later reunited and starting dating in 2016.
The relationship later ended in 2018.

Niall Horan says death 'just doesn't feel real'
Her statement comes as Payne's former One Direction band mate Niall Horan said his death "just doesn't feel real".
Horan was the last member of the boy band to pay individual tribute to Payne and had last seen him in Buenos Aires during one of Horan's shows on October 2.
"I feel so fortunate that I got to see him recently," he wrote on Instagram.
"I sadly didn't know that after saying goodbye and hugging him that evening, I would be saying goodbye forever.
"It's heartbreaking."
A joint statement from remaining members Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles and Horan on Thursday had said the four would take time to grieve their "brother".
""We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam," it read.
Tomlinson, Malik and Styles then released individual statements, with Tomlinson saying he would be there for Bear as an uncle to "tell him stories of how amazing his dad was".
Girlfriend says she loved Payne 'unconditionally'
Kate Cassidy, Payne's girlfriend who had been with him in Argentina days before his death, called the star "my angel" before asking for privacy.
Cassidy, a TikTok influencer who had started dating Payne around 2022, said "nothing about the past few days have felt real".
She also addressed the Instagram story to "Liam, my angel".
"You are everything," she said.
"I want you to know I loved you unconditionally and completely.
"I will continue to love you for the rest of my life. I love you Liam."
Cassidy asked for the "grace and space" to navigate her grief privately.
It comes as his father Geoff Payne reportedly landed in Argentina, police sources told AFP.
The source did not say whether he would visit the morgue where the body of his son is being kept pending the results of toxicological tests.
An autopsy suggested he had not tried to stop his fall and was in a state of "semi or total unconsciousness" before his death.
The singer was alone at the time and appeared to be "going through an episode of substance abuse," Argentinian prosecutors said.
