Trump describes Madison Square Garden rally as a 'love fest'

Good morning from Allentown, Pennsylvania, where Donald Trump is due to hold a rally later today.

It's potentially awkward timing for the former president amid the fallout from a controversy that has upset members of America's Puerto Rican community.

In his warm up act at Trump's recent Madison Square Garden rally, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe described the US territory as a "floating island of garbage."

The Trump campaign has sought to distance itself from the comments, saying they did not reflect the former president's views. Trump has since told American ABC he didn't know the comedian or hear the joke as it was made.

But in remarks delivered from his Mar-a-Lago residence earlier today, he described the Madison Square Garden event as a "love fest".

"An absolute love fest and it was my honour to be involved," he said.

People living in Puerto Rico are not allowed to vote in presidential elections, but there are a number of communities in critical swing states — like Allentown, Pennsylvania — where a significant proportion of the population has Puerto Rican heritage.

So it will be interesting to see whether Trump directly addresses the matter while he's in town.
