Little did he know vision of his death would be broadcast around the world.
WARNING Some readers might find details of this story disturbing
The 19-year-old was killed in an Israeli air strike on the Al-Aqsa hospital in Deir Al Balah in central Gaza in the early hours of Monday morning, local time.
His mother also died in the blaze.
The attack caused an inferno to rip through tents of displaced Palestinians in the grounds of the hospital.
Video of the fire has sent shock waves around the world, with a White House spokesperson labelling the scenes as "deeply disturbing".
In the video of the fire, Shaban can be seen lying on his back with his arms lifted into the air as the fire engulfs the tent around him.
"I can't describe the feeling, I saw my brother burning in front of me and my mother was burning," Shaban's brother Mohammed said.
"Thank god the fire brigade came, put out the fire and took my brother out.
"Praise god, they took him out martyred with my mother. I couldn't recognise my brother's features, I did not recognise my mother but for the bracelet on her wrist."
Mohammed said others at the hospital were holding him as he watched his brother and mother die, Shaban screaming for someone to save him as the fire took hold.
Shaban's hopes for the future
Shaban had started an online fundraising page, hoping to raise money to help his family of seven flee Gaza and make a new life in Egypt.
In the days after he was killed, the campaign had raised almost $40,000.
The page displays photos of Shaban and his family, along with his proud declaration that he was in the top 10 of his cohort at university studying software engineering.
In March, Shaban posted a video of the aftermath from a separate strike on the Al-Aqsa hospital.
His family had been sheltering there since February.
"There is no safe place here in Gaza," he said at the time.
Shaban posted a video donating blood at the hospital, saying there was a "dire need" for supplies.
Israel insists hospital strike was a targeted attack on Hamas
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) says it was targeting a Hamas command centre within the hospital compound, and argued the fire was most likely caused by "secondary explosions".
Shaban's uncle said being burned was the "most difficult thing for a person".
"This is a message to the world," Abdulhay Al-Dalou pleaded.
"I wish the world look at it and see the reactions of people regarding this burning of a Palestinian person, who is being tortured day and night."
The IDF has been repeatedly criticised for targeting hospitals and health clinics in Gaza.
In response, the IDF has accused Hamas of embedding its fighters and resources in such facilities.
The incident at Al-Aqsa hospital on Monday happened amid one of the most intense bombardments of Gaza since the war began.
There are concerns the IDF has been trying to force Palestinians towards central and southern parts of the strip, planning to isolate northern Gaza from the rest of the territory.
A controversial plan drafted by former Israeli generals is fuelling those fears, although serving IDF officials deny it is being put in place.
