FBI arrests Florida man planning attack on New York Stock Exchange seeking to 'reboot' US government
A man had named the New York Stock Exchange as the target of an attack.
In short:
The FBI has arrested and charged a Florida man for plotting to "reboot" the US government by bombing the New York Stock Exchange.
Harun Abdul-Malik Yener, 30, who tried and failed to join far-right groups the Boogaloo Bois and Proud Boys, was found to be storing bomb-making sketches and materials.
What's next?
Yener had his first court appearance on Wednesday afternoon local time and will be detained while he awaits a trial.
The FBI has arrested a homeless Florida man and charged him with plotting to bomb the New York Stock Exchange to "reboot" the US government, federal officials allege.
The suspect, Harun Abdul-Malik Yener, 30, took steps to set off a bomb outside the stock exchange (NYSE) on Wall Street in lower Manhattan, according to an FBI affidavit.
The affidavit was filed in support of a criminal complaint charging Yener with attempting to damage or destroy a building used in interstate commerce by means of an explosive.
The FBI began investigating Yener in February based on a tip that he was storing "bomb-making schematics" in a storage unit.
They found bomb-making sketches, many watches with timers, electronic circuit boards and other electronics that could be used for building explosive devices, according to the FBI.
He had also searched online for things related to bomb-making since 2017, according to the FBI.
Yener also told undercover FBI agents that he wanted to detonate the bomb the week before Thanksgiving and that the stock exchange in lower Manhattan would be a popular site to target.
"The stock exchange, we want to hit that, because it will wake people up," he told undercover FBI agents, according to court documents.
He was also allegedly recorded saying "I feel like Bin Laden".
History of radical behaviour
Yener's motives remained unclear. The FBI said that besides making the comment about Osama bin Laden, the former al Qaeda leader and mastermind of the 2001 attacks on the United States, Yener also described an attempt to join right-wing militias and expressed general anti-government sentiment, saying: "This country is due for a revolution."
Yener, who was described as "unhoused," wanted to bomb the stock exchange in order to "reboot" or "reset" the US government, explaining that it would be "like a small nuke went off," killing everyone inside the building, according to conversations with three undercover employees included in court documents.
An attack on the New York Stock Exchange was foiled by the FBI.
In the past month, he had rewired two-way radios so that they could work as remote triggers for an explosive device and planned to wear a disguise when planting the explosives, according to court documents.
Yener had his first court appearance on Wednesday afternoon local time and will be detained while he awaits a trial.
He was known to post videos on YouTube channels about making explosives and fireworks from household items, and had a history of making threats, according to court documents.
He was fired last year from a restaurant in Coconut Creek, Florida, after his former supervisor said he threatened to "go Parkland shooter in this place."
He was also part of a small group that tried to join the far-right anti-government group the Boogaloo Bois and extremist group the Proud Boys but was denied membership because he said he wanted "to pursue martyrdom," according to court documents.
Yener has been assigned a federal public defender in the Southern District of Florida whose office did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for a statement regarding his defence.
Calls from the AP to telephone numbers listed for Harun Abdul-Malik Yener in public records rang unanswered.
