Indonesia's Mount Lewotobi volcano erupts, killing several locals
Volcanic material was thrown up to 6 kilometers from Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki's crater.
At least 10 people have died in Indonesia after a series of volcanic eruptions on the remote island of Flores.
The eruption at Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki just after midnight on Monday spewed thick brownish ash as high as 2,000 metres into the air and hot ash hit a nearby village.
It burned several houses including a convent of Catholic nuns, said Firman Yosef, an official at the Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki monitoring post.
At least 10 people died after a volcano in eastern Indonesia erupted several times.
"After the eruption, there was a power outage and then it was raining and big lightning which caused panic among residents," Hadi Wijaya, a spokesperson for The Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, said on Monday.
The East Flores Regional Disaster Management Agency raised the death toll, reporting that 10 people had lost their lives, buried under collapsed houses.
Residents described their horror when the crater started to shoot flaming rocks at their homes.
"I was asleep when suddenly the bed shook twice, as if someone had slammed it. Then I realised the volcano had erupted, so I ran outside," 32-year-old hairdresser Hermanus Mite said.
"I saw flames coming out and immediately fled. There were ashes and stones everywhere.
"My salon also caught fire and everything inside was lost."
"These victims have been evacuated from the rubble of buildings," Fredy Moat Aeng, the head of the East Flores Regional Disaster Management Agency, said.
A collapsed building in Klatanlo village, in East Flores, in the aftermath of the eruption.
Agusta Palma, the head of the Saint Gabriel Foundation that oversees convents on the majority-Catholic island, said a nun in Hokeng village died and another was missing.
"Our nuns ran out in panic under a rain of volcanic ash in the darkness," she said.
The agency has recommended a 7-kilometre radius must be cleared.
Fiery lava and rocks hit the nearest settlements about 4km from the crater, Mr Wijaya added.
At least 10,000 people have been affected by the eruption in Wulanggitang District, in the six nearby villages of Pululera, Nawokote, Hokeng Jaya, Klatanlo, Boru and Boru Kedang.
